See To Learn Program

Our practice proudly participates in an innovative, three-step preventive national health program designed to ensure that kindergarten children entering Kansas schools can SEE TO LEARN TM.

Step 1
Ongoing education to alert parents and educators about the signs of vision problems in children of any age.
Step 2
A free vision assessment for your three-year-old by a participating Eye Care Council optometrist, of which we are one.
Step 3
A complete eye exam prior to kindergarten paid by the parent, a small investment in your child's ability to see to learn.

Why read aloud to your children?

Animated picture

As a parent, you are your child's first and most important teacher. You provide the foundation for your child's learning skills right at home. You can set your children on the path to a lifetime of reading by reading to them. Research shows that children who are read to become readers, and are more likely to be successful in school.

Pure and simple, reading gives your child a head start on learning. But don't stop reading aloud when your child learns to read. Reading together when your child is older gives you an opportunity to share time and talk together.

Reading. It's one of the most important things you'll ever do for your child. Begin Today. Read.

INFANTSEE™

Did you know?

  • 1 out of 10 children is at risk from undiagnosed vision problems
  • Amblyopia—often referred to as lazy eye—a leading cause of vision loss in people younger than 45, will affect 1 in 30 children.
  • 56 percent of mothers and expectant mothers are not certain of when the most critical age is for the development of eyesight
  • 97 percent of mothers say they do everything they can to ensure their children's health, yet only 13 percent of mothers with children younger than 2 years of age have taken their babies to see an eye and vision professional for a regular check-up or well-care visit

Your Infant's First Visit to Dr. Marks

A baby's first visit to Dr. Marks for an eye assessment should happen between 6 and 12 months of age. Although infants cannot respond verbally, the first year of life is an ideal time to conduct a comprehensive eye assessment.

What Happens During an InfantSEE Assessment?

An InfantSEE assessment can detect potential for vision and eye health problems, which can be more easily corrected if treatment is started early. Typically, an infant will sit on his or her parent's lap during the assessment, in which the optometrist will use lights and other hand held objects, like finger puppets, to check that the baby's eyes are working together and that there are no significant issues that will interfere with proper vision development.
